Why Are We obsessed with OUR Pore Size?

There is nothing more exciting than small, clean, healthy pores. When you look at a baby's skin, you may notice their smooth, nearly perfect complexion. Why do pores grow larger as we age? Is it possible to achieve that pore-less flawless skin we see all over the internet?

Pores are enlarged hair follicles that release oil through the sebaceous gland to keep our skin lubricated. Unfortunately, pores can become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and dirt causing them to expand in size. Enlarged pores have many different causes including genetics, excessive sebum (oil) production, hormonal shifts, UV radiation (sun damage), and of course, aging. Even some comedogenic products can result in enlarged pores.

There are many different types of treatments and products that can reduce the appearance of enlarged facial pores as well as prevent them from expanding. Retinoids are a wonderful aid for improving the look of pores by exfoliating dead skin cells as well as clearing clogged oil in the pores. Chemical peels and salicylic acid based toners and face washes are great for removing bacteria, sebum, and other debris from the pores resulting in a smaller appearance. Microneedling treatments can make the pores appear smaller by boosting collagen in the skin, and improving acne scars. Aquagold Meso Botox Facial is a procedure that deposits micro-doses of Botox and hyaluronic acid dermal filler into the superficial top layers of the skin, creating a smoother more luminous complexion. Laser resurfacing with the Fraxel or Deka Co2 Laser has many benefits including stimulation of collagen, which plumps and tightens the skin leading to a reduced appearance of the pores. Lastly, and most importantly you should be applying sunscreen daily to prevent sun damage which speeds up the aging process by breaking down collagen and elasticity which leads to enlarged pores.

As a reminder, your pore size is your pore size, just like your shoe size is your show size, it cannot be changed. Though you may not be able to “shrink” your pores back down to beautiful baby skin, there are many effective treatments and procedures to reduce the appearance of the pores.
