Vitamin D

You may have heard the phrase “Make sure you’re getting your daily dose of vitamin D.” Many people believe vitamin D is solely the vitamin we get from sunlight, which is true. However, vitamin D can also be absorbed through supplements and foods as well. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in one's overall health. The power of vitamin D goes a long way and has extremely important functions throughout the body.

To start, vitamin D promotes healthy bones. Calcium is the most common mineral in the human body and keeps the bones and teeth healthy. Because the body can only absorb calcium when vitamin D is present, it is crucial to be getting enough as being deficient can lead to osteoporosis, fractures, and weak bones. It also supports the immune system by aiding the proper response to viral infections. Vitamin D improves cognitive function, supports the nervous system, and fights inflammation. Health risks of Hypovitaminosis D include cardiovascular disease, cancer, and metabolic syndrome.

The one way to check if you have a vitamin D deficiency is to get labs ordered by a provider and to get your blood drawn. Since vitamin D deficiency symptoms range and can be associated with other deficiencies and diseases, labs ordered by a physician are highly recommended. Symptoms of this vitamin D deficiency include fatigue, bone pain, and muscle weakness. Low vitamin D can also be the cause of poor wound healing, hair loss, weight gain, depression and anxiety. Post menopausal women should have their vitamin D checked as it contributes to bone density and it is important to maintain bone health as women age to reduce the risks of injury. Other risk factors include those who get limited sun exposure and having darker pigmented skin.

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that offers a wide range of health benefits. It is important to discuss with your provider the amount of vitamin D you should be taking a day as too much can be harmful. With the proper amount of vitamin D in the body, your overall health and wellbeing can be greatly improved.
