June is Acne Awareness Month

June is national acne awareness month and with acne being the most common skin condition in the United States, here is some information that you may or may not have known.

First of all, acne can appear at any stage of life. Most people think hormonal teenagers are the main age group to struggle with acne, but acne breakouts can actually pop up at any time in your life. Up to 50 million Americans are affected by acne every year. So what causes acne? Acne is caused when oil and dead skin cells clog pores or tiny hair follicles. When you think of acne, you probably think of red, white, or even black bumps on the face, back, or chest. However, there are several types of acne, noninflammatory acne and inflammatory.

Inflammatory acne contains papules, pustules, nodules (under the skin), and cystic acne which you may be familiar with as bumps underneath the skin filled with pus. Noninflammatory acne typically is less swollen and inflamed, hence the name. This type typically presents as blackheads or small whiteheads on the skin. Luckily, non-inflammatory acne can be successfully treated and managed with products containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Products containing benzoyl peroxide can be helpful in treatment as it attacks the bacteria and reduces inflammation.

Treatment options for acne usually range from medications to laser and light therapies, to chemical peels. A certified dermatologist or healthcare provider can help you find the best treatment option specifically for you. It is also important to take care of your skin by keeping it clean and being gentle with your “at home” routine. Over washing and treating your face can actually irritate the skin and can lead to improper oil production.

There are many factors that can cause acne whether it's a change in hormones, genetics, topical irritants, or even stress and diet. Everyone's skin is special and unique to them, therefore acne treatments are not a “one size fits all” protocol. It is recommended to get a dermatologist's assessment on finding the best acne treatment for you.
